Quick & Dirty Prototype

E-mail Print PDF

Today we built a prototype of our design for the 2009 Quick & Dirty Boat Race.  The build was more physical labor than I'm used to, but it was fun nonetheless.

I don't have any photos of us building the boat, but I do have some of us testing it.  Click the play button to start the slideshow. If you mouse over the images below, a caption will slide down describing the photo.

Even though the boat took on a great deal of water, the design still should work well if we pay better attention to sealing the hulls.  I just hope we can beat Jensen Maritime, last year's winner.

New Whiteboard!

E-mail Print PDF

I don't think I did too well on my first engineering physics exam. Frown I had only really mastered about 2/3rds of the material, and most of the questions on the exam were about the iffy parts.  To help myself practice physics without killing a small forest of trees to produce engineering paper, I bought a whiteboard.  I ordered it from Business-Supply.com late Wednesday night after my exam.  They said it would arrive on Tuesday, but it arrived today already thanks to the gumption of Oak Harbor Freight Lines!

My initial impressions of this whiteboard are very good, and I am quite impressed with Business-Supply.com as well.  Not only do they have great prices, but great service as well.  If you are in the market for a whiteboard, I heartily reccommend this board from Business-Supply.com.

Spring Quarter 2009

E-mail Print PDF

Well, spring quarter started on the first, and it was actually trying to snow on the way to campus (really, no April Fool's)!  This March went in and out like a lion.  I hope that "spring" begins to behave more like spring should.

Last quarter I got a A in my Java-based Data Structures course.  It was nearly a flawless performance--I missed 5 out of 1000 points.  In my Calculus I class I earned a solid A-.  And, in my final (whew!) chemistry course, I managed to pull out a B-, even with missing a fairly large chunk of the last three weeks of class.  While that is far from ideal, at least the ugly hack that is chemistry is finally over! :-)

This quarter I'm taking 19 credits!

  • Calculus II (5 cr)
  • General Engineering Physics I (6 cr)
  • Computer-Aided Drafting I (3 cr)
  • Microeconomics (5 cr)

I'm also going to be tutoring up to half-dozen students in C++ and Java (for CS210 & CS 211).

Ooooh.  The sun is shining!  Must relish it before it disappears!

Back to School

E-mail Print PDF

In other news, I am going back to college (Bellevue Community College) to get an A.S. in Pre-Engineering, leading eventually to a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. I expect to get my A.S. in Spring of 2010. As of this writing, I've aced Macroeconomics, Engineering Graphics (a.k.a. drafting), and Fundamentals of Computer Science I(C++). I got an A- in General Inorganic & Physical Chemistry I and a B+ in Trigonometry. While not ideal, it is acceptable. As to the Trig, there were some holes in my understanding of algebra, so I went back and audited Precalculus I rather than moving directly on to Calculus I. That gave me a solid foundation to build on.
